More About Us

Shōganji is a Zen Buddhist temple serving local families in the area, not a monastery. Unlike hotels, it offers an immersive cultural experience where guests participate in temple life, including “onsen” hot spring bathing visits, gardening, cooking, and local events.
Shōganji is perfect for those seeking an authentic, immersive experience in rural Japan. Whether engaging with local monks and temple members or embracing solitude, guests can find a unique balance of cultural exploration and personal reflection in this tranquil setting.

Environment

Saganoseki is a charming seaside village known for its fishing, rice fields, and citrus groves, nestled between scenic mountains. The tranquil location is perfect for hiking, beach-combing, and embracing a slower pace of life. From May to September, the beach offers ideal swimming conditions. The region is also home to numerous onsen hot springs, with nearby Beppu boasting Japan’s highest concentration of natural hot springs.

Review

From the first email until the last goodbye, Pierre made me feel so welcome. The temple is a special place to practice meditation and yoga and get a feel for temple life. Meals were always prepared together so it felt like we were one big family. The field trips to Usuki and Yufuin were just an added bonus. A rare experience for Japan.

The Zen Buddhist temple was an amazing experience. Jiho-san was a very amazing host and Pierre was very responsive and helpful along the way. The neighbourhood was very quaint and quiet, with a beautiful view of the waterfront. The unique experience is definitely something everyone should consider experiencing.
