More About Us

At Beppu Zen Retreat, meals are central to the Zen lifestyle. We offer visitors a glimpse into daily life at a functioning Zen temple and a chance to engage with the local community. Besides our regular activities such as group meditations, we can take you to Off-site activities: Onsen (hot spring bathing), Sightseeing, Hiking, etc. upon your request.

Guests participate in preparing home-cooked Japanese dishes, using fresh, local ingredients tailored to dietary needs, including vegetarian options. The meals reflect Zen principles of mindfulness and simplicity, encouraging guests to savor each moment and reconnect with nature and well-being. Nestled between mountains and the sea near GyaTeiJi temple, the retreat’s intimate setting creates a transformative experience of food, connection, and mindfulness.

Environment

GyaTeiJi Zen Temple, established in 1346 and held by the Kono family for three generations, is just a 30-second walk from the guesthouse. Guests practice morning meditation and participate in various retreat activities at the temple, which also serves as a local community hub.
Beppu is Onsen capital of Japan, and you can enjoy hot spring bathing. We are located 45-60 minutes away from Oita Airport, and 2hours 30minutes away from Fukuoka Airport.

Review

Yodo’s family is just wonderful. It was such a beautiful experience for my first meditation retreat. The warm and kindness of a multigenerational Japanese family, the peace of a beautiful old temple, and the discovery of the very rich Japanese culture and food. Very close to Beppu town for onsen and sand bath experience too. I will definitely come back! Thanks again Yodo!

The mediation experience, which included guidance and practice, was the highlight for me. It was complemented by other activities which were of high quality. The latter include calligraphy, tea ceremony, onsen visits, interaction with the local temple community, insightful and fun conversation, and more. I found everything pleasant. No disappointments.
