- “You are how you eat.” Shojin-Ryori is one of the Japanese cuisine, that is prepared based on Buddhist philosophy. This plan includes not only Shojin-Ryori dinner but also a 90 mins workshop by our chief monk to learn its philosophy. Dark Meditation sharpens the senses, heightens consciousness, and provides an opportunity to connect more deeply with your spiritual essence. As you go through the darkness, you will touch the ‘Key to Paradise.’

The chief priest of Takayama Zenko-ji, Kaiji, will guide you through a meditation experience. Beginners are more than welcome, with detailed explanations and breathing techniques provided.

Environment
Takayama Zenko-ji is a branch temple of Shinshu Zenko-ji Daibongan and the only temple in Gifu Prefecture officially granted the title of “Betsuin” (branch temple). The main hall enshrines Amida Nyorai, and beneath it lies a Kaidan-meguri, just like the one in Shinshu Zenko-ji. In complete darkness, visitors can touch the “Key to Purification and Rebirth in Paradise,” an experience believed to cleanse past misdeeds and create a spiritual connection to enlightenment. The lodgings welcome international visitors, offering a diverse and inclusive environment. Guests also have access to a shared kitchen, allowing for a comfortable and flexible stay.
