Shogakuji Temple

Fukuosan Shogakuji is a Soto Zen temple nestled in the rich nature of Hannō City, Saitama Prefecture. Surrounded by the sounds of birds and rivers, and a sky full of stars at night, we offer retreat experiences where you can refresh your body and mind through zazen (seated meditation), Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), and sutra copying. Our temple lodging (shukubo) allows you to experience a monk’s daily practice through a one-night, two-day stay.

More About Us

At Shogakuji, we provide precious time to reflect on yourself, away from daily life, through zazen, sutra copying, and Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine). You will enjoy two meals (dinner and breakfast) same as monks, and focus on meditation to regain balance of mind and body. Day-trip zazen sessions are also available upon request. We also welcome visitors seeking personal consultations. In addition, our facilities can be used for corporate retreats and sports training camps, offering programs such as Dharma talks and sutra copying for group participants. Surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature, please spend a special moment at Shogakuji.

Environment

Founded in 1483, Shogakuji stands quietly along the river, embraced by the mountains of Naguri. This Soto Zen temple in Saitama, offers a serene and natural setting while being relatively close to Tokyo. Summers are cool without the air conditioning, while autumn to spring tends to be slightly cooler. On weekends and national holidays, the temple is also open for lunch and cafe service from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Reviews

Absolutely beautiful experience. We stayed for two nights and feel refreshed, learned a lot and enjoyed the nature around us.
The zazen sessions with the abbot were calming and we learned a lot. Also the hosts are great and so lovely. We hope to come back one day.

Highly recommend. The monk was patient and kind, the vegetarian meals prepared by his wife were delicious. It felt very authentic and the surrounding area is beautiful where you can practice zazen meditation. A real hidden gem, enjoyed my meditation and teachings (with Google translate). Really happy I found this place.
